Podcast Recs (1)

All are an hour or less for episode length.

NONFICTION (mostly true crime)

Serial Killers and Unsolved Murders, both on the Parcast network. Episodes are about 45 minutes to just shy of an hour mostly. Very professional, excellent sound quality, most cases they handle are covered in two separate episodes. While I have specifically listed these two, you can expect the same level of quality and length from anything by Parcast. (Others I listen to less regularly by Parcast are Haunted Places, Hostage, Cults, and Female Criminals. Yes all of them are very 'what's on the tin' as far as the topic of the podcast and the naming of them). Almost all of their shows update weekly.

Lore etc - Aaron Mahnke is always Quality tbh. Lore was his first podcast and focuses on strange stories from the past, a little bit history, ghost story, old wives tale all wrapped together. Episodes are about 30 minutes, the later ones on the longer side of that and the earlier ones on the shorter side. About weekly. He also does Cabinet of Curiosities which is basically Lore but in 10 minute bitesize eps that come out a few times a week and Unobscured which just wrapped Season 1 which was a hard facts history focus on the Salem Witch Trials that includes interviews with historical professors who are experts on it. Those eps closer to an hour in length. Not sure what season 2 is gonna be about yet.

They Walk Among Us UK focused true crime. About 30 minutes per episode with the occasional two parter though in the intro you'll be told if it is one. Good quality for audio. Updates weekly.

True Crime Sisters Australia based true crime. Walks the line between monologue and discussion podcast but manages to keep episodes at average of half an hour with the exception of the irregular minisode done by only one of the hosts on currently active missing person cases she's trying to bring attention to. Sound is amateur but I'm still in the early episodes. Updates every two weeks or so.

Beyond Bizarre True Crime what it says on the tin. Episodes are about 20 minutes in length on average, updates about once a month.

Macabre London Spooky stories from London's history, a 75% true crime, 25% possible urban legend. Aside from two specials, most episodes are 30 minutes or less. Audio quality is a little amateur but still alright. Updates monthlyish

Murder Under The Midnight Sun Alaska focused true crime. Episodes are an hour or less. Audio quality is... listenable, but there are times when the sound goes off entirely for a pause and I'm left wondering if the podcast is just over before it starts up again. Updates irregularly, but usually at least once a month.

Southern Fried True Crime like They Walk Among Us and Murder under the midnight sun, this is a geographically focused true crime for the southern united states. Episodes are about an hour.

FICTION

I'm not listing Magnus Archives and Eos 10 here because the person this list is for is already a fan of both so I would be preaching to the choir but know that if she hadn't they would be first listed bolded, and underlined.

The White Vault found footage style, ensemble cast, focuses on a crew that was sent to an outpost in Svalbard to repair some science equipment only to find they are not alone up there. Great quality, great voice acting. Updates twice a month. 20-30 minute episodes aside from the occasional out layer of a special like interviews with the creators and cast.

Blackwood Found audio style investigation into a local urban legend uncovers an actual plot which might involve murder. Season 1 just finished. About 30 minutes per episode. Audio quality is 'pretending to be found footage' so good that is trying to not sound as good.

Limetown Reporter goes on the case to solve the mystery of what happened to a town whose residents just seemingly vanished overnight, uncovering a conspiracy in the process. While there was a big hiatus between seasons 1 and 2, season 2 just wrapped and it should be back on schedule. Most eps are around 30 minutes with the occasional extra tidbit that's five minutes or less (ex in one episode they reference a 911 call and there's a bonus episode that is supposed to be the 911 call). Good quality, good acting.

The Blood Crow Stories ensemble cast different stories every season that all at least dip their toes in horror. The first season was an alternate reality earth with a steampunk submarine/cruise liner combo in the 1930's/40's, second season was a western, third season is cyberpunk. Good audio quality, some of the VAs chew the scenery a bit and at least a couple have intentionally annoying voices but most don't. 30 minute eps, updates twice a month, a no heterosexual zone.
